This is yet another fast travel glitch at its core, but it also needs something extra to work.

It's normally impossible to open Select-menu after the rappel animation has begun. However: if you have a Quest-prompt open on screen, it gives you a bit more leeway on this matter and enables you to open Select-menu some frames into the rappel animation, enabling you to combine fast travel + rappel.

Incidentally, you can create a Quest-prompt wherever you want by creating an errand inside the crafting menu, so finding the necessary conditions to start this glitch isn't a big issue.

So, what about this whole rappelling through ground thing? Basically, the rappel continues wherever you go after the fast travel, and in most cases this results in Aloy burrowing straight through under the map. Although, it should be mentioned that this glitch (like a few other fast travel glitches) seems to have a range limitation, and trying to go too far away just makes nothing happen.

0:00 - first, there are a few examples of rappelling through ground from around Meridian.

1:57 - rappelling under Meridian from the Meridian campfire looks so cool that the rest of the video is just out of bounds sightseeing. The big cube of water is especially nice.

(Not on the vid: you can use this same Quest-window loophole to combine fast travel with other involved actions that prevent opening Select-menu as well. For instance dialogue or quest-related prompts like examining things on ground. But so far these actions + fast travel haven't created any interesting results. The Select-menu becomes disabled for some reason if you get the timing right (until retry), but that seems to be it.)
