How a $20K Tow Bill could send a driver to prison! | Trucking Answers
A Colorado truck driver is in hot water over a $20000 tow bill. Apparently, he was driving in Wisconsin and he was run off the road into a swampy area. The police called a tow company and the tow company needed 3 heavy wreckers to get him out. Once he went to the tow yard to retrieve his truck he was presented with a $20400 bill! Yikes. So he thought that was high but his boss was willing to pay it. The tow company wanted a Comcheck and his boss was only willing to pay by wire transfer. I don't know why that is. Anyway, they declined that and the driver left. Well, the tow company comes in the next day and finds that truck has been removed and they say some cars on the property were also damaged during the removal. The police question the driver and he admits taking the truck out but says he didn't damage anything. The problem is that the bill had not been paid. So, the police arrest the driver and charge him with multiple felonies. He is facing a $20000 fine and up to 9 years and 6 months in the slammer! Is that crazy? The moral of the story is don't take the law into your own hands, you take them to court.
