How do scientists identify a meteorite from another planet?
A recent study suggests that two meteorites found on Earth may be fragments of Mercury. To support this hypothesis, researchers conducted several experiments and identified characteristics in the material consistent with the planet closest to the Sun. But how can you determine the origin of objects from space? In an interview with Olhar Espacial, Gabriel Gonçalves – a PhD in fundamental chemistry with a concentration in astrobiology from USP – explained the methods used to analyze meteorites and determine which planet they came from.
