To accept a friend request in Destiny 2, follow these steps:

Open the Roster section from the map.
Go to Manage Invites.

Search for your friend’s Bungie Name (including the unique four-digit ID).
Send them an invite.

Have your friend accept the invite from the same section.

Alternatively, you can import friends from other networks on Bungie.com or the mobile app1. Once your Bungie Friends list is populated, you can easily invite friends for crossplay by interacting with them through the Roster tab in the Director
