How to Block Spam Calls on iPhone with Settings (Best Method)
Blocking spam calls on an iPhone can be managed effectively using built-in settings and features to filter or silence unwanted calls.
Method 1: Enable Silence Unknown Callers
This feature sends calls from numbers not in your Contacts, recent outgoing calls, or Siri Suggestions to voicemail without ringing, effectively reducing spam and private number calls.
Open Settings:
Tap the Settings app on your iPhone’s home screen.
Go to Phone Settings:
Scroll down and tap Phone.
Turn On Silence Unknown Callers:
Tap Silence Unknown Callers.
Toggle the switch to On (green).
How It Works:
Calls from unknown numbers, including “No Caller ID” or spam calls, go to voicemail without ringing.
They appear in the Phone app’s Recents tab, and voicemails (if left) are available in the Voicemail tab.
Verify Voicemail Setup:
Go to Phone - Voicemail and set up voicemail if not already enabled, as silenced calls rely on it for messages.
Note: This silences all non-contact numbers, not just spam, so add important numbers (e.g., doctors, businesses) to Contacts to avoid missing legitimate calls.
Method 2: Block Specific Spam Numbers
You can manually block individual numbers identified as spam from your call log.
Open the Phone App:
Launch the Phone app and go to the Recents tab.
Find the Spam Number:
Locate the spam call (often labeled “Scam Likely” or “Spam” if your carrier supports spam detection).
Tap the info (i) icon next to the number.
Block the Number:
Scroll down and tap Block this Caller.
Confirm by tapping Block Contact.
Manage Blocked Numbers:
Go to Settings - Phone- Blocked Contacts to view or edit your blocked list.
To unblock, tap Edit, then the minus (-) icon next to the number.
Note: Spam callers often use different numbers (spoofing), so blocking individual numbers may have limited impact. Combine with other methods for better results.
Method 3: Enable Call Blocking & Identification (Carrier or System Features)
Some carriers integrate spam detection into iOS, labeling calls as “Scam Likely” or “Spam” to help you identify them.
Check Carrier Settings:
Go to Settings - Phone - Call Blocking & Identification.
If your carrier provides spam detection (e.g., Verizon’s Call Filter, T-Mobile’s Scam Shield), ensure it’s enabled here.
No third-party app is needed for carrier-based detection.
Enable Silence Junk Callers (iOS 17 and Later):
In Settings - Phone - Call Blocking & Identification, toggle on Silence Junk Callers if available (carrier-dependent).
This automatically sends calls identified as spam by your carrier to voicemail without ringing.
