How to Factory Reset iPhone before you Sell it (Best Method)
A factory reset wipes all personal data, settings, and apps from your iPhone, returning it to its original state, which is essential before selling it to protect your privacy. Here’s how to factory reset your iPhone (running iOS 18 or later) and prepare it for sale:
Steps to Factory Reset Your iPhone
Back Up Your Data (Optional):
If you want to keep your data, back up your iPhone:
iCloud: Go to Settings - [Your Name]- iCloud - iCloud Backup-Back Up Now. Ensure you’re connected to Wi-Fi.
Computer: Connect your iPhone to a Mac or PC, open Finder (Mac) or iTunes (PC), select your device, and click Back Up Now.
Verify the backup is complete before proceeding.
Sign Out of iCloud and Other Services:
Sign Out of iCloud:
Go to Settings - [Your Name].
Scroll down and tap Sign Out.
Enter your Apple ID password and tap Turn Off (for Find My iPhone).
Choose whether to keep a copy of data (e.g., contacts) on the iPhone (select none if selling), then tap Sign Out again to confirm.
Sign Out of Other Services:
Sign out of apps like iMessage (Settings - Messages Send & Receive [Your Apple ID] - Sign Out) and FaceTime (Settings- FaceTime -[Your Apple ID]-Sign Out).
Check third-party apps (e.g., banking, social media) and sign out manually.
Turn Off Find My iPhone:
This is usually disabled when signing out of iCloud (step above). To confirm:
Go to Settings - [Your Name] - Find My - Find My iPhone.
Toggle off Find My iPhone and enter your Apple ID password to confirm.
This removes the Activation Lock, allowing the new owner to set up the device.
Factory Reset the iPhone:
Go to Settings - General- Transfer or Reset iPhone.
Tap Erase All Content and Settings.
If prompted, enter your passcode and Apple ID password to confirm.
Authenticate with Face ID, Touch ID, or your passcode if required.
Tap Continue and wait for the process to complete. The iPhone will restart and display the “Hello” setup screen.
Remove eSIM or Physical SIM (If Applicable):
eSIM: Go to Settings-Cellular-Cellular Plans, select the plan, and tap Delete eSIM. Contact your carrier if you need assistance.
Physical SIM: Remove the SIM card using a SIM eject tool or paperclip (insert into the pinhole near the SIM tray, usually on the right side of the iPhone).
This ensures the new owner can use their own carrier plan.
