Discord makes it easy to build and interact with a community of people. Whether you make content that is gaming focused and you want to easily interact with your Discord community while playing a game, or you just want to be able to more easily stay on top of the Discord servers you're involved with while you game, the Discord overlay will help you do that. After you link your Steam account to your Discord account, you can turn on the Discord overlay for Steam games, which will show you your Discord messages. If you need help connecting your Discord and Steam accounts, I'll link to my video in the description and pinned comment that will show you how to do that.
Now let's walk through the steps to enable your Discord overlay on Steam.
Step 1. Make sure you have the Discord desktop application open, and that your Steam account is connected to your Discord account. If you need help connecting your Steam account to your Discord account, I'll link to my video in the description that will show you how to do that.
Step 2. Click the "Settings" icon in the lower left corner of your Discord home screen. Your Discord Settings screen is displayed.
Step 3. Find the Activity Status section in the menu on the left side of the screen, and then click "Game Overlay" in that section. Game Overlay options are displayed on the right side of the screen.
Step 4. Find the Enable Overlay section at the top of the screen, and then click to toggle on "Enable In-game Overlay" in that section. Additionally, check the Toggle Overlay Lock section next to that to see what the shortcut keys are for you to quickly turn the Discord overlay on and off on Steam. You can change it if you need to.
Step 5. Review the current selections and make changes as necessary to the sections for Avatar Size, Display Names, and Display Users.
Step 6. Scroll down to the Overlay Notifications section and then click to highlight the corner of the screen where you want your Discord overlay to display your notifications on your Steam games.
Step 7. Now, click "Activity Status" in the Activity Settings section in the menu on the left side of the screen. Activity Status options are shown on the right side of the screen. You'll see a list of games on this screen associated with your connected Steam account.
Step 8. Find the Steam game you want to show the Discord overlay on, and then find the icon featuring the computer monitor next to it. Click that icon to remove the line that's going through it, which will enable your Discord overlay for that Steam game.
Going forward, whenever you play that game on Steam, your Discord overlay will be displayed in your chosen location.
