The first step is to look at the things you use or do on a regular basis. Maybe you're a big video game player. Maybe you work as a project manager. Maybe you're a .NET developer or a Python expert. Maybe you own a shop that specializes in tint and automobile detailing. There are no limits here, but it's important to find those things you're deeply familiar with, and have a lot of knowledge about. The reason we're generating this list is to ultimately focus in on a few key topics where we have a lot of knowledge where we can hopefully give ourselves a big pool of ideas to pull from. And as you generate more videos on a specific topic, search engines and people looking for advice on this topic will start to view you as a subject matter expert. Another benefit of creating content around a specific topic is that you'll get a boost from being able to easily cross promote videos that share a subject in video cards, end screens, and in descriptions, and they'll be more likely to show up in a viewer's suggested videos.

So now the next step after identifying a few potential areas where you think you have a lot to offer and want to try establish yourself as a subject matter expert is to identify the content you want to create around those topics. You'll want to identify how to-type videos, list videos and other types of videos that can be generated around a specific topic. The easiest place to find topics that have value is either Google or YouTube in the search bar. So, for example, if I've got a lot of experience as a project manager and I want to create videos around project management, I would go to the search bar on YouTube and type in "project management how to." You'll see a drop-down list populate that will give you top searches associated with auto-completing that phrase. In this example we can see that good YouTube video ideas would be how to run team meetings, how to manage resources, how to stay organized, and how to handle team conflict. Another way to identify good YouTube video ideas is to think of the things you had to look up how to do in that particular area. For example, if you as a project manager had to do a lot of research around building a communication plan, a project schedule, or a work breakdown structure, those would probably be good topics associated with your subject to create content around. I've found that if I struggled with something, it's a good bet that other people have struggled with it as well. The final, and probably best area, to get ideas for good YouTube video topics is the wide variety of keyword explorer tools that are available. And while some of them are paid options, a lot of them are free. I like using Moz, but it only gives you 10 free searches per month. Other good options include TubeBuddy and SEM Rush. All of these will generate a list of popular phrases people search for around your topic. You'll get some degree of visibility into search volume, competition, keyword value, and more for each phrase.

Now that you probably have a laundry list of videos you want to make in the one or two areas you want to try and establish yourself as a subject matter expert, it's time to prioritize the order in which you want to make those videos. I'd recommend starting with the videos where the keyword competition is lower so that as you build yourself up, the videos you think will be more successful will roll out to a bigger audience and have a better chance of success. However, at the end of the day, I've found that you really can't predict what videos will be a hit, so it's important to keep moving forward and creating content and not get hung up on short-term struggles and frustrations. I remember early on when my views and earnings were increasing in a steady fashion and all of a sudden plateaued for three months I was terrified. I worked to focus on making videos and suddenly the channel found some steam and was back on track in no time. That's happened a few times, but as long as you keep making good YouTube content around a specific topic, I think there's a good chance your YouTube channel will be fine and continue to grow.
