How to Fix & Get 120 FPS & 120 Hz on your Xbox Series X/S (Easy Method)
To enable 120 FPS and 120 Hz on your Xbox Series X/S, you need to ensure that your console, display, and settings are all correctly configured. Here's how to do it step-by-step:
1. Ensure Your TV/Monitor Supports 120Hz
Check Your TV/Monitor’s Specs: Make sure your TV or monitor supports 120Hz refresh rate at 4K resolution or lower. If it doesn’t support 120Hz, you won’t be able to take full advantage of this feature.
For Xbox Series X: You need a display that supports HDMI 2.1 for 4K at 120Hz. HDMI 2.0 may only support 120Hz at 1080p or 1440p.
For Xbox Series S: The Series S can achieve 120Hz at 1080p or 1440p but does not support 120Hz at 4K.
2. Use the Right HDMI Cable
Use the HDMI 2.1 Cable provided with your Xbox Series X or Series S. This cable is capable of handling high data transfer rates required for 4K at 120Hz.
If you use a third-party cable, make sure it is HDMI 2.1 certified.
3. Connect to the Correct HDMI Port
HDMI 2.1 Port: Ensure you are connecting your Xbox Series X/S to the HDMI port on your TV or monitor that supports 120Hz and HDMI 2.1. Some TVs have specific HDMI ports that support these higher refresh rates.
4. Set 120Hz Output on Xbox Console
Turn on your Xbox Console and make sure it's connected to the 120Hz-capable HDMI port on your TV or monitor.
Open the Guide
Press the Xbox button on your controller to open the guide.
Go to Settings
Scroll to Profile & system - Settings - General -TV & display options.
Change Resolution and Refresh Rate
In the Display section, select Resolution and set it to 1440p (for Series S) or 4K UHD (for Series X).
Select Refresh Rate and set it to 120Hz. You’ll need a compatible TV/monitor for this to appear.
5. Enable 120Hz in Video Modes
Go to Video Modes
In Settings - General - TV & display options, scroll down to Video modes.
Enable 120Hz
Check the box for Allow 120Hz. If your TV/monitor supports 120Hz, this option should be available.
Enable Allow HDR and Allow Dolby Vision if supported by your display.
6. Test 120 FPS/120Hz Output
Check for 120Hz support
Once you’ve configured your settings, go to Settings - General - TV & display options. It should show 120Hz as the active refresh rate if everything is set up correctly.
Test Your Display
Some TVs have a Game Mode or Performance Mode setting. Make sure this is enabled to minimize input lag and maximize the refresh rate.
Test a Game
Play a game that supports 120 FPS, like Call of Duty: Warzone, Rocket League, or Halo Infinite.
These games will automatically switch to 120 FPS if your display supports it.
