How to Fix LAG Spikes with PS5 Settings (Connection Issues)
To fix lag spikes on your PS5, you can adjust a few settings and troubleshoot to improve your connection and performance. Lag spikes can be caused by internet connection issues, hardware problems, or game settings, but the following tips should help optimize your PS5 experience:
Step 1: Check Your Internet Connection
Lag spikes are often caused by a slow or unstable internet connection. Here’s how to ensure your connection is optimized:
Test Internet Connection on PS5
Go to Settings - Network.
Select Test Internet Connection to check your download/upload speeds and connection quality.
If your download speed is lower than 10 Mbps, you may experience lag. Ideally, a speed of 25 Mbps or higher is recommended for stable gaming.
Improve Wi-Fi Connection
Reduce Interference: Make sure your PS5 is not too far from your router and avoid obstacles like thick walls or large metal objects that can interfere with the signal.
Use 5GHz Wi-Fi: If your router supports 5GHz Wi-Fi, switch to it for faster speeds and less interference.
Switch to a Wired Connection: A wired LAN connection is more stable and faster than Wi-Fi. Use an Ethernet cable to connect your PS5 directly to the router.
Step 2: Optimize Network Settings
Change DNS Settings
Sometimes, using a different DNS server can reduce lag:
Go to Settings - Network - Set Up Internet Connection.
Select Wi-Fi or LAN and choose Advanced Settings.
Select DNS Settings- Manual.
Enter a Public DNS like Google’s (8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4) or Cloudflare's (1.1.1.1 and 1.0.0.1).
Set Up a Static IP Address
If you’re still facing lag, you might benefit from setting up a static IP on your PS5, which can improve connection stability.
In Advanced Settings, find the IP Address Settings and set it to Manual.
Enter an IP address that's within your router’s range but outside the DHCP pool.
Step 3: Enable Quality of Service (QoS) on Your Router
If your router supports QoS, enable it to prioritize gaming traffic:
Log into your router’s admin settings (typically accessed through a browser at 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1).
Locate QoS settings (may be called something different depending on your router).
Set the PS5 to the highest priority to ensure it gets the best bandwidth.
Step 4: Adjust PS5 Settings for Performance
Enable Game Mode on Your TV
If you're using a TV with HDMI 2.1, make sure Game Mode is enabled to reduce input lag and improve performance.
Adjust Power Saving Settings
Go to Settings - System - Power Saving - Set Time Until PS5 Enters Rest Mode.
Set it to Do Not Put in Rest Mode to avoid any interruptions while gaming.
Enable Performance Mode in Games
If you're playing games that offer graphical settings, some games on PS5 offer a Performance Mode that prioritizes frame rate over resolution.
Go to Settings - Saved Data and Game/App Settings.
Under Game Presets, choose Performance Mode if available.
Step 5: Close Background Apps and Other Devices
Running multiple apps or having other devices connected to your Wi-Fi can increase lag.
Close Background Apps: Press the PS button, scroll to the game you want to play, and make sure other apps (like Netflix, YouTube, or web browsers) are closed.
Disconnect Unnecessary Devices: Other devices (phones, computers, smart TVs) using your network can also cause lag. Disconnect non-essential devices while gaming.
Step 6: Update PS5 System and Game Firmware
Outdated software can cause lag spikes, so ensure your system and games are up to date.
Go to Settings- System- System Software -System Software Update and Settings.
Choose Update System Software to ensure your PS5 is running the latest version.
For games, go to your Game Library, highlight the game, press the Options button, and select Check for Update.
Step 7: Contact Your ISP or Change Internet Plan
If none of the above steps help and your internet connection is still unstable or slow, consider:
Contacting your Internet Service Provider (ISP) for assistance with speed or connection issues.
Upgrading to a higher speed internet plan if you’re experiencing regular lag spikes, especially in online multiplayer games.
