It doesn't take long to fill up your Xbox One hard drive. To free up space for new games, you may finding yourself deleting games that you're not quite finished playing. Adding storage to your Xbox One is affordable, and will take care of this problem. Almost any USB 3.0 hard drive with more than 256 GB of storage will work. Additionally, make sure you use a USB 3.0 cable and not a USB 2.0 cable when connecting the hard drive to your Xbox One.
Now let's walk through the steps for adding an external hard drive to your Xbox One.
Step 1. Connect your external hard drive to your Xbox console using a USB 3.0 cable. USB ports are located in different places on different Xbox One models, so you'll need to check the sides and back of your Xbox One to find an available USB port to connect your external hard drive to.
Step 2. A dialog box asking if you want to use your connected external hard drive for either media, or for games and apps appears. Select "Format Storage Device." The next screen will prompt you to give your storage device a name.
Step 3. Enter a name for your storage device, and then press "A." The next screen asks if you want new game or app installs to be installed at your current location or on the new hard drive that you're connecting.
Step 4. In this example, I'll choose "Install New Things Here." However, you can navigate to Settings, System, and then Storage at any time to change your default storage location. A Format Device screen appears, warning you that after formatting your external hard drive you'll only be able to use it with Xbox One consoles. Don't panic. You can always reformat this device at a later date if you need to use it with a computer.
Step 5. Select "Format Storage Device." The System window will close and you'll e returned to your Xbox Live home screen. After the format is complete, a notification appears informing you that your external storage is ready.
Next, let's walk through how to see the contents and other information associated with your Xbox Live Storage devices.
Step 1. Use the left analog stick to highlight your gamerpic on your Xbox Live home screen, and then press "A." A menu appears.
Step 2. Use the left analog stick to highlight the System icon in the row of icons along the top of the menu. The System icon looks like a gear.
Step 3. Choose "Settings" in the System menu. The Account screen appears.
Step 4. Select "System" on the left side of the screen, and then choose "Storage" on the right side of the screen. The System Storage screen appears.
Step 5. Use the left analog stick to navigate over to the Manage Storage section, where all of your connected storage devices will be displayed.
Step 6. Highlight any of the available storage options you want to see additional options for, and then press "A." A context menu appears. From here, you can click "View Contents" to see the contents of a specific hard drive connected to your Xbox One console, change it to be the default storage location, and more.
