How to Create or Change Avatar on Xbox Live

Microsoft's avatar system rolled out with the Xbox 360 has long been due for a refresh. With an update released in late 2018, Microsoft is finally doing just that, rolling out a new avatar system that gives users an impressive number of options for creating their own custom avatar. In this video, I'll walk you through how to access the system, and discuss some of the options.
Now let's walk through how to create a new Xbox Live avatar.
Step 1. Highlight your gamertag and profile pic displayed in the upper left corner of the Xbox Live home screen, and then press "A." A menu appears.
Step 2. Use the left analog stick to select "System" in the row of options along the top of the screen. The System icon looks like a gear, and is on the far right side of that row of icons.
Step 3. Highlight "Settings" in the System menu, and then press "A." The Account screen appears.
Step 4. Select "Personalization" on the left side of the screen, and then select "My Profile" on the right side of the screen. A screen displaying information about your profile appears.
Step 5. Select "Customize Profile" on the right side of the screen. Options associated with customizing your profile appear on the screen.
Step 6. Choose "Create Avatar" on the right side of the screen. Click "Get Started" in the avatar greeting screen if that appears. You'll arrive at a screen prompting you to choose an avatar to start with.
Step 7. Scroll through the available avatars, and then press "A" to select the avatar you want to start with. Press "A" again to choose "Use Selected Avatar." An information screen for your avatar appears.
Step 8. Select "Appearance." The appearance editing screen appears, where you can modify various aspects of your body, such as shape and height; your face, such as your eyes, ears and nose; your hair and facial hair; and more.
Step 9. Click "Closet" to bring up a screen that lets you customize all aspects of your Xbox avatar's outfit. You can choose "Outfits," and then choose from one of the themed outfits, or you can work through all of the options in the Outfits menu and customize each aspect of your Xbox avatar's outfit, such as hats, tops, dresses, shoes, and more.
Step 10. Select "Moods" to open a menu where you can customize your Xbox Live avatar's mood. You can choose from annoyed, cocky, clumsy, surprised, sleepy, furious, happy, and more.
Step 11. Choose "Photobooth" on the menu screen to bring up a screen that lets you capture a picture of your Xbox avatar to use as your gamerpic. This is the screen where you can use the Animation button to choose from a variety of animations for your avatar, and then you can use the camera button to capture an image of your avatar at any point in that animation.
