One of the items that should be on your checklist of things to do prior to selling or trading in your old iPhone or iPad, is removing it from the list of devices associated with your Apple ID. Leaving an old iPhone or iPad associated with your account could mean that it will receive your verification code for two-factor authentication; removing your old iPhone or iPad from the list of devices associated with your Apple ID guarantees that won't happen.
Now let's walk through the steps to remove your iPhone or iPad from your Apple account.
Step 1. Open your web browser and navigate to appleid.apple.com. The Apple ID login screen appears.
Step 2. Enter your Apple ID username in the Apple ID field, and then click the right-pointing arrow. A drop-down prompting you for your password appears. Enter your password and then click the right-pointing arrow on the right side of the password field. Your Apple ID home screen appears.
Step 3. Scroll down to the Devices section. Locate the device you want to remove from being associated with your Apple ID, and then click that device. A dialog box displaying information associated with that device appears.
Step 4. Click "Remove from Account" in the bottom of the information dialog box for that device. A dialog box appears asking if you're sure you want to remove that device from your Apple account.
Step 5. Click "Remove this Device" in this dialog box. You'll return to your Apple ID information screen, where you'll see your device has been removed in the Devices section.
