Creating a sense of depth in a painting is important for the viewer to feel the expansiveness of a landscape.

To do this we have to start lighter and add more and more colour as we come closer to the front.

Another important thing is to overlap the hills to make it seem like one is closer than the other.

Last but not least, the higher the contrast the closer the objects. (Not always but at least in this light it would be true)
