About this video: This is our complete guide for how to play Minecraft Java Edition with a controller in 2024. We cover everything you need to know about how to use a controller on Minecraft Java. In order to play Minecraft on PC with a controller, you will need to install a controller mod. There are two Minecraft controller mods to look at - Midnight Controls for Fabric and Controllable for Forge.
We will be showing the Midnight Controls Minecraft controller mod. This is because in 2024 Midnight Controls updates much faster than other Minecraft controller mods. The downside is that it is a Fabric mod meaning it generally has less compatibility with other mods as most mods are for the Forge mod loader.
The solution to that is the Controllable mod. It is installed just like other Forge mods and works with the Forge mod loader. It is usually much slower to update though in comparison to Midnight Controls.
At this point though, we can move on to how to download the Minecraft controller mod. First off, we will actually need to download and install the Fabric mod loader. This is the mod loader that the Midnight Controls mod uses. You can find our complete guide on getting Fabric linked above. We also cover the basics for getting Fabric for the Minecraft Java controller mod in the video.
From there, we can move on to how to download the Minecraft controller mod. Above, you will find a link to Midnight Controls that will take you to the official download page on Modrinth. Here, click the “Versions” tab and find the version of Midnight Controls you want to download. Click the green download button next to this version and the download will begin.
Once MidnightControls is downloaded, you will also need to download the FabricAPI. This is an API mod required to get MidnightControls working in-game. There is a link to the FabricAPI in the description above. There, click the download button to be taken to CurseForge. On CurseForge, find the FabricAPI version of the same version of MidnightControls you downloaded, click the three dots next to it, and click “Download File”.
Now, we can move on to how to install the Minecraft Java Edition controller mod in 2024. To get started, open up the Minecraft Launcher. Then, in the Minecraft Launcher, click on the “Installations” tab at the top. Here, you will see a Fabric installation. Hover over this and click the Folder icon that appears.
This will open your .minecraft folder. Here, you should have a “mods” folder. If you don’t, just create one. Then, move the MidnightControls mod and the FabricAPI into the mods folder. It’s that easy to install MidnightControls and use a controller with Minecraft Java Edition.
All that needs to be done at this point is plug your controller into your PC using USB or Bluetooth. This mod allows you to use an Xbox controller with Minecraft Java Edition as well as a Playstation, Switch, and even Steamdeck controller with Minecraft Java. Once you are in-game, you will be able to navigate the menus using the controller and play Minecraft with it.
