First things first, you will need to download a shader pack. There are hundreds of different shader packs out there, and there is a link in the description above to some of the best shader packs for Minecraft. All of these are compatible with OptiFine shaders for Java Edition 1.20.4.
When downloading a pack, you are most likely going to be using CurseForge or Modrinth for the download. Both sites are safe, and can be used for shader pack downloads. They can also be a great place to find additional shader packs that aren’t in our article.
Once you have a Minecraft shader for 1.20.4 downloaded, you will need to download OptiFine. OptiFine is what allows shaders to work in Minecraft 1.20.4. You can find a link to download OptiFine in the description above. That will take you to our text guide on getting 1.20.4 Optifine for shaders. Click the “Download OptiFine” button to be taken to the official OptiFine download page.
On OptiFine’s website, download the Minecraft 1.20.4 version of OptiFine. After it is downloaded, open the OptiFine Installer file you downloaded with Java and then click “Install” to install OptiFine 1.20.4.
With OptiFine setup, we can now move on to how to install shaders for Minecraft PC 1.20.4. Open Minecraft using the OptiFine profile/installation in the Minecraft Launcher. Then, from the Minecraft main menu, click on “Options”, “Video Settings”, and “Shaders”. Here, you will see a “Shader Folder” button in the bottom left. Click to open your shaderpacks folder.
Finally, in order to add shaders to Minecraft Java 1.20.4, drag-and-drop the shader packs you downloaded into this shaderpacks folder. Then, when you come back to Minecraft, you will see all of the shader packs installed!
To actually get shaders working just click on the shader pack you want to use. Then, click “Done” at the bottom of the Shader menu. Minecraft will reload, and your shader pack will be selected. If you navigate back to the shaders menu, you will see “Shader options” in the bottom right. This will allow you to change your shader pack options and customize the shader pack to exactly how you want it.
