Pop the foreground off the background with this simple game design and game art tip. By adjusting the saturation levels of the background you can create a layered effect that will make the foreground pop out which will be easier for the player to read what is going on. I give examples from multiple games including metal slug 3, horizon zero dawn and child of light. A small tutorial is also included that shows how to quickly achieve this effect.
