Step 1: Ensure Orientation Lock is turned OFF. Simply swipe down from the top to reveal the quick settings. If the rotate icon is highlighted in yellow, tap on it to disable the feature.
Step 2: Physically rotate the camera 90 degrees so it’s in a vertical (portrait) orientation. The Osmo Action 5 Pro is designed to detect orientation automatically, thanks to its built-in gyroscope and screen flip functionality.
Hold the camera vertically — with the lens at the top and screen at the bottom (or vice versa). The front or rear display will automatically rotate to match the new orientation.
Step 3: Swipe down from the top to reveal the quick settings. Tap on the rotate icon to lock the orientation. This ensures that the video remains in portrait mode.
Step 4: If you have the protective case, you can place the camera on the magnetic mount on its vertical edge to record video in vertical mode.
Step 5: Use either the front or rear screen to preview your shot in vertical format. This helps in aligning subjects properly, avoiding awkward cropping and ensuring key elements remain centered.
You can also enable Grid Lines under settings to improve your composition.
Step 6: Before recording an important piece of content, hit the Record button and film a short test clip. Play it back to ensure it's in vertical format.
If the video looks sideways, rotate it during editing (in DJI Mimo or another editing app).
Step 7: Once you've recorded your vertical footage, transfer it to your phone or computer. Open the DJI Mimo app, CapCut, InShot, or another editor.
Trim, crop, add music, and apply filters to make it Reels- or Shorts-ready.
