How to Reduce Eye strain and PWM on your LG TV (Easy Tutorial)
Reducing eye strain and PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) flicker on your LG TV can improve your viewing comfort. Here are some steps you can take:
1. Adjust Brightness and Contrast
Lower the Brightness:
High brightness settings can strain your eyes. Try reducing the brightness to a comfortable level, ideally between 30–50% depending on your room lighting.
Go to Settings - Picture - Brightness and adjust it to a level that’s comfortable for your eyes.
Adjust Contrast:
Similarly, adjust the Contrast settings for better visibility without being too harsh.
Go to Settings - Picture - Contrast and lower it slightly.
2. Enable "Eye Comfort Mode" (if available)
Some LG TVs come with an Eye Comfort Mode that reduces blue light and adjusts screen settings to be easier on the eyes.
To enable it:
Go to Settings - Picture - Picture Mode Settings.
Select Eye Comfort (or a similar option, depending on your model).
3. Enable Blue Light Filter
Reducing blue light emitted by the screen can help reduce eye strain, especially during long viewing sessions.
Go to Settings - Picture - Advanced Settings - Blue Light.
Adjust the Blue Light setting to a lower value or enable a Blue Light Filter if available.
4. Enable "OLED Care" (for OLED TVs)
For LG OLED TVs, enabling OLED Care can help reduce the risk of burn-in and flicker, indirectly contributing to reducing eye strain.
Go to Settings - General - OLED Care and enable options like Pixel Refresher and Screen Shift.
5. Adjust the Refresh Rate
For some models, the refresh rate of the TV can be adjusted to reduce flicker and improve viewing comfort.
Go to Settings - Picture - Refresh Rate and choose the optimal setting for your TV. This is particularly helpful for models with 120Hz refresh rates.
6. Enable Motion Smoothing
Motion smoothing can reduce screen flicker, but it's often more of a personal preference for comfort.
To enable or adjust motion smoothing:
Go to Settings - Picture - TruMotion.
You can select Smooth or Clear motion settings to reduce judder and flickering.
7. Use the "Low Blue Light" Picture Mode
Many LG TVs have a Low Blue Light picture mode designed to reduce blue light emissions, which can alleviate eye strain.
Go to Settings - Picture - Picture Mode Settings, and select Low Blue Light.
8. Adjust Room Lighting
Proper ambient lighting can reduce eye strain. Ensure your room has adequate, indirect lighting to balance the TV’s brightness.
Avoid watching TV in complete darkness or in overly bright rooms. A bias light behind the TV (a soft light source) can help.
9. Use Anti-Flicker Screen Settings
Some LG TVs feature settings to reduce PWM flicker.
For OLED models, this can be addressed by enabling OLED Motion settings, which help reduce the flicker associated with low brightness levels.
10. Take Breaks and Follow the 20-20-20 Rule
A good habit is the 20-20-20 rule: Every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds. This helps reduce the risk of eye strain during extended TV viewing sessions.
