how to setup the DSS2 DXL1 with the PC using Dolby Digital Live DDL
bug\anomaly in the DSS2 box, read on, This is a redo video with updates
.
This would not be an issue. If the PC stayed at just one speaker config.
( 5.1 or 4.0 or 2.0 ) all the time.
Two ways to bug out:
1.
With all 4 LEDs on, turning off the surround LED
then turning the surround function back on, the sound
level remains decreased. The only way to restore
proper functionality is to power cycle the DSS2
2.
After changing speaker config.( say, 2.0 to 5.1 ) in PCs' Creative Control Panel,
the DSS2 may decrease the audio quality\level in the front.
( power cycle the DSS2 to restore. )
How can I tell ? If a faint in game sound effect is heard from the rear center,
but not the front center, the DSS2 may not be decoding correctly.( power cycle it )
The "volume level" front to rear for ALL presets should always be the same.
At the same time, they should sound slighty different because of the phase\time
shifted analogue.
A better way( no guess needed ) is to:
1. select speaker config. via Creative Control Panel .
2. start an app.( game or DVD player ) software.
3. load level or start movie .
4. Now power cycle the DSS2 .
5. The surround presets can now be selected as needed, no issues noted here.
The speaker config. 5.1 4.0 2.0 do NOT seem to affect stereo music playback, however
the surround presets DO affect music playback. Preset 1 really makes a tight
center sound stage with reduced ambience .
Preset 4 gives the widest stereo sound stage when Dolby is running.
preset 1 is a classic setup with 5.1 discrete speakers.
( the rear are on-axis with the listener ) This is the Dolby Film mode .
And that's why preset 1 is the default .
For games, preset 1 can be very good.
For music , preset 1 NOT so good
The front is more like a sound bar , and the surround speakers are NOT
behind the listener. Because the DSS2 is a stereo down-mix, the narrow
60 degree front field gives reduced bandwidth, This reduced bandwidth
would not occure in a discrete speaker system because the physical speaker
placement is Real, not virtual .
If you want to hear in the rear( behind your head ), consider preset 6 .
6 is mostly the opposite of 1 . 6 is very tight rear center behind the head .
While it is a "down mix" to stereo, the positional data does get used to
phase\time shift and build a positional analogue stereo signal .
I recorded some DSS2 output, just for fun.
panasonic portable head phones image in 360 degrees with the DSS2 .
Gotta have that DDL from creative dot com Must have a creative branded
sound card for Dolby Digital Live
older sound cards need the DDL download :
Audigy uses Audigy download.
x-Fi uses the DDL \ DTS pack download .
I have xtreme gamer x-Fi regular PCI , creative retail box.
Creative set up the license, so DDL is very exclusive to creative branded boards.
DXL1 real use listening:
low freq. good down to about 32 Hz .
30 Hz ? probably not.
keep the Eq. Flat .
If the bass is boosted all you get is "muddy" mid-bass.
The Eq. presets really trash the freq. response of the system. keep it Flat .
( as Most Eqs. do trash any audio systems response )
Consider:
plug a TV , or DVD player audio optic cable into the DSS2 .
head set has:
very low ear\side pressure
( no other full size head set wears like the DXL1 , not even other turtle beachs' )
light weight 6.4 ounces.
they look a little slinky, but so easy to wear.
no sweat ear cushion material .
I hear outside sounds , so use in a quit area, but if someone needs to hear
external conversation then that could be a good thing.
I plug the 3 ft USB power cord into the TV USB maintenance port to power the DSS2
The head set can plug directly into any notebook, without the DSS2 box.
Plug in the USB to power the InLine amp. , plug the 3.5 mm jack into the
computers' mini phono head phone jack.
The headphone has great stereo sound even without the DSS2 box.
The DSS2 box even has 2 analogue input ports.
I got a 2.5 mm to 3.5 mm adaptor to plug the mic into the PC mic port. I only ever heard the mic in the left speaker. Not sure that the mic is PC compatible, Turtle Beach says the Mic is NOT compatible with the PC. I don't use the mic, always muted.
I use the DXL1 package for movies, music, games.
Turtle Beach says the DX12 system is PC mic compatible .
I listened to the "made for home" headphones from the classic headphone makers.
Just wasn't hearing 350 worth of audio quality. Plus the DXL1 package has a Dolby
DSP box .....You don't get that with a name brand headphone, not even for 350 .
go to "turtlebeach dot com" to download the manual in pdf format .
I hear at least 8 locations of sound:
FL..FC..FR
L...............R
RL..RC..RR
7.1 or 5.1 is moot
uploaded as QT , animation codec , 1280 x 720 , no audio .
