How to still play retail disc Battlefield 1942 or Battlefield Vietnam online without GameSpy
WARNING: Hosting an online multiplayer game involves opening up virtual internet access ports to your computer, which MAY lead to unwanted intrusion by nefarious persons and/or software. As a precaution, you should ALWAYS have a software firewall running, ESPECIALLY if you are setting your computer's local network IP as the DeMilitarized Zone or DMZ.
This video will show you how you can still play Battlefield 1942 and Battlefield Vietnam (retail disc versions) online multiplayer over the Internet despite the shutting down of the GameSpy Account Servers. Although matchmaking services (the ability to list, browse and join servers) is no longer available, one can still connect to an online Battlefield game via IP address.
In addition, this video will show you how to host an online multiplayer co-op or conquest mode game directly from within the game client running in Microsoft Windows. What this permits you to do is set which maps are to be played, the map rotation, the time limit per match, the maximum number of players in a match, the spawn time before deploying into battle, the ticket ratio per each match (how many tickets are required by one side to win the match), the time limit allocated to be revived once downed on the battlefield, and should you choose to add AI controlled soldiers, the ratio of bots to actual live human players, the number of A.I. CPU controlled bots as well as the difficulty level when facing the bots.
NOTE: In Battlefield Vietnam, if clients are becoming stuck on a black 'Connecting' screen and are never actually joining the hosted game despite the indication on the host's screen, then the host must re-launch their server using the START LOCAL option instead of the START INTERNET option (the 'Start Internet' funciton no longer functions without GameSpy servers present it would seem).
Note that this method does NOT function for Battlefield 2. For Battlefield 2, please view:
