About this video: This video shows you exactly how you can stop lag on your Minecraft server. Running a network server like we do at BreakdownCraft, we run into different types of lag all the time. This video shows you how to find the different types of lag that Minecraft servers will have and how you can fix them.
First and foremost, in order to run a lag-free #MinecraftServer, you need a good server host that has high-quality hardware. For this, I would recommend Apex Minecraft Hosting. This is who we host our server with, and we absolutely love them. On top of that, they have incredible support and an overall awesome eco-system.
After you have a good #Minecraft server host, you need to run the right server software. The answer here is very simple. No matter what, run your server on Paper. Paper is a performance-optimized version of Spigot/Bukkkit, and it will increase your server's performance by at least 30% as soon as you deploy it. It also is a drop in upgrade from Bukkit and Spigot making things super easy.
Once you have Paper running on your server, you need to optimize your Bukkit.yml, Spigot.yml, and Paper.yml files to be the most lag free possible. There is an article linked above that shows you how to setup the Spigot.yml file and how to setup the Paper.yml file to be as lag-free and as performance optimized as possible. This helped our server a ton when we rolled it out!
Once you have done all of this, you should notice your server performing a ton better. If it isn't, you need to figure out exactly what is causing the lag. To do this, run a timings report. If you have Paper, this is super easy. Just type /timings paste in game. You will then get a link where you can go and see the laggiest part of your server. Once you figure it out, you need to fix it.
There are many ways to do this including some pretty cool plugins. For example, you can use StackMob to reduce mob lag, or EpicHoppers to stop lag from hoppers. You can also install something like ClearLagg to keep server items down, RAM free, and entities cleared.
Using the above methods you will be able to take a super laggy server and stop any and all lag that it has.
