Two things you need to know about me before we jump into this chat.
1. I've been happily married for 14 years.
2. I hate Valentines day...but, not for the reasons you may be thinking.
With that in mind, let's jump into 5 lessons we can learn from a lifetime's worth of hate for Valentine's day.
1. A Love For Authenticity
Let's face it, Valentine's day is about as legitimate as Halloween in the US. It's a superficial holiday designed to sell chocolate and flowers, much like Halloween is designed to sell candy.
I hate pretty much anything in life that's not authentic. I perfer to show my wife love, affection and appreciation without having to be told to do it by other marketers.
The Lesson: Keep your marketing authentic. If your clients suspect that you are drumming up excitement just so you can line your pockets, you will lose their trust.
2. A Personal Touch
Early in our marriage, my wife used to ask me what I loved about her. Imagine what would have happened if I just tossed out a bunch of general cliches to answer her need to be encouraged.
Exactly. It would not have ended well. Consider how you may be tossing out general cliches to your audience and make your messaging more personal and focused. Your audience wants to believe they are the center of your universe. Help them to believe that they are with messaging tailored to their wants and needs.
3. Don't Be So Predictable
Love is boring when you can see it coming. That's another reason I hate Valentine's day. There's no spontaneity to it.
It's okay to have routines built into your marketing, but always remember to wow your clients with something new and unexpected every once in awhile
This is not to be mistaken with the IFC Film "I Hate Valentines Day" -I Hate Valentine's Day is a 2009 romantic comedy film written and directed by Nia Vardalos. The film stars Vardalos and John Corbett, previously seen together in Vardalos' hit 2002 film My Big Fat Greek Wedding. The film was released on July 3, 2009, by IFC Films.
The Plot of that film may apply as well, though. LoL
Florist Genevieve Gernier (Vardalos) believes that the best way to achieve romantic fulfillment is to never go on more than five dates with the same man. She is forced to reassess her philosophy when she meets Greg Gatlin (Corbett), a restaurateur who moves into her neighborhood.
