When my younger cousin first introduced me to Snapchat, I was blown away by how unintuitive it seemed. It was as if Snapchat's creators were trying to scare older people way by making the interface overly complicated and "weird."
I didn't want to dismiss it, though. As a self-proclaimed marketing guru I knew I would need to understand and ultimately master the Snapchat phenomenon.
So I pressed forward.
For the first month I used it, I struggled hard to grasp why younger users saw value in a picture app where the pictures disappeared after 24 hours. I asked my cousin why he liked it and he couldn't even explain why Snapchat was so attractive to him over a Twitter or Instagram.
But then it dawned on me.
Snapchat became the new hotness because it went against the grain. In a time where every other Social Media platform on the planet was taking a "look at me" approach to sharing content, Snapchat was the first to take a more exclusive approach.
What do I mean by that?
Simple, on Snapchat, what you are sharing is not public. It's not about blowing up and going viral, it's about sharing something intimate and personal with the exact people you want to see it.
Snapchat focuses on engagement over exposure. It scratches the itch we have to play the "look at me" game while also allowing us to connect with our people on a much more personally level.
So why should you consider marketing on Snapchat?
You mean other than the fact that over 60% of all 13-34 year olds with smartphones are on the platform...
and
37% of users fall in the 8-24 year old category..
and
71% of its users being under 25 years old...
Clearly if millenials are a part of your target audience, Snapchat is where you may find a metric ton of them.
But, more importantly, Snapchat will give you the opportunity to connect and engage with your millenial clients in a way that's much more personal and authentic than the conventional methods of promoting on Twitter or Facebook.
