Master The Power Of Social Media Marketing For Your Business
Entrepreneurs new to the social media world have a tendency to overcomplicate exactly what social media marketing is.
As with any medium, marketing on social media is still just great storytelling at it's core. If you are a great storyteller, you will always find success in your marketing (assuming you know your audience).
Social media is just the newest platform in a long line of platforms ranging from word-of-mouth, to snail mail, to email. In fact, Social Media most closely resembles organic word-of-mouth marketing out of the three.
With this in mind, let's cover some simple social media marketing concepts and tactics for the entrepreneur new to this landscape.
There is Nothing New Under the Sun
Before we jump into this short discussion, I want to make it clear that Social Media is not altogether different from the way humans have been communicating for the last several thousand years. Yes, the technology is unique and cutting edge, but the platforms we use to engage one another online observe the same laws of marketing and branding that have been in existence since marketing and branding were things.
With that said, we'll tip our hats to King Solomon and get into the discussion about how to use social media conceptually.
1. Shorter is not always better
I'm sure you've heard at least a million times that attention spans in the world are waning by the minute.
The real truth is not that attention spans getting shorter. Instead, the amount of information is increasing exponentially and forcing consumers to make split second choices about what they pay attention to.
That said, if you have something compelling enough, you can keep your audience hooked for longer messages. Plus, longer messages can help boost your SEO by providing the search engines more context to attribute relevance to your articles.
While Twitter doesn't support long-winded pontification, Google+ and Facebook more than welcome longer posts. And don't worry, depending on your business, you may be better off using Twitter to pull information rather than to push it (but that's another blog post).
2. Don't Underestimate the Power of Facebook Groups
Facebook pages are always great to have, but a group gives your business the opportunity to interact with you and one-another. This adds to your ability to create the network affect with your content, products and services. Something absolutely necessary when building brand insistence.
3. Go Beyond Communication to Connection
I've quoted Nido Quebin more than once in a good deal of my work. But his belief that we must go beyond communication by connecting is spot on.
I've seen this work everywhere from warfare to running a social media marketing academy.
4. Politically Correct is Boring
It's okay to be a little polarizing. In fact, Seth Godin in his book, The Purple Cow, would argue that being polarizing is essential to survival.
We never want to offend, but if you have a polaraizing opinion or take on a subject it's okay to share it in a way that respects others' viewpoints.
