Running a mini DP to HDMI adapter into an HDMI to Composite AV converter seems to work though I can't change any settings in Pop OS! while it's plugged in. Not sure if I should blame Linux or the HDMI to AV converter for this but running a converter into another converter probably doesn't help. The dual monitor and settings menus in general for Pop OS! seemed to work fine when I used the same mini DP to HMDI adapter on my LG TV so it might just be the fact that's going to the HDMI to AV converter. When hooked up to my TV I could see the multi-monitor options and other display settings even showing that an "LG TV" was connected. Yet when the same DP to HDMI adapter is plugged into the HDMI to AV converter/CRT the settings menu won't even show that a 2nd display is connected and the output will turn off completely. So I can't change any settings at all while the monitor is plugged in to the laptop and if I try the monitor output just crashes and I have to unplug it and plug it back in to get it running again. Also it seems if I do this too many times it will eventually stop detecting the 2nd external display all together when plugged back in and at this point I'll have to reset the laptop to get it working again. Since I can't get into settings I can't change the resolution or mirror/extended options for the external display but I also can't even change the audio output from the laptop speaker to the DP/HDMI output! That's right it's not just the display settings I can't use it's anything in the settings menus for Pop OS! at all! I can change the audio output device in VLC but then it's too quiet and I can't change the system volume for that output! The volume on the keyboard still changes the system volume for the speakers, not the specific VLC output being used. I can't pre-emptively change the volume because the option doesn't show up in settings until the DP adapter is plugged in and once it's plugged in I can't open settings without it disconnecting! Kinda crazy but I have to say with all that aside... it works! Not only does it work but it actually looks pretty darn decent for composite coming from a cheap converter! The audio settings issue is solved by simply plugging powered speakers into the headphone output! Though I can't help wonder if all this would work better if my laptop was just running Windows 10 instead? Oh well.
