Almost 18 years later, a new entry in the R-Type series is nearly released. My mind was blown when I first heard that the game was in development and I tossed a hefty chunk of cash into the Kickstarter for the game.

The demo for R-Type Final 2 is super solid - I'm happy that everything overall feels very similar to the first game - the ship feel, level pacing, sounds, etc. are all there. It's surreal to walk around in the R-Museum and see the far-more-detailed ships up close. The extended preview video that plays upon beating the demo stage shows a ton of cool stuff.

So far my only concern is hopefully the soundtrack is good - the track that plays at the beginning of the demo stage is distinctly different than what I remember from R-Type Final, so I wonder if it's a homage to some earlier pre-Delta stuff or what.

While I'm playing the PS4 version in this video, I played the Switch version as well. The game runs relatively smooth on PS4, though it's relatively choppy on Switch. I'm hoping they have time for optimization leading up to release (or shortly after). I'll be buying at least the Steam and Switch versions, assuming there's no major issues with the PC port, anyways. I've seen some other playthroughs of the PS version running a good bit smoother especially when killing the frozen Dobkeratops, so I'm wondering if maybe that's running on a PS4 Pro or PS5.
