On the surface, this doesn't look like anything to write home about, and in a sense, it isn't. There's nothing too sophisticated about the gameplay, the controls are a bit clunky, and the visuals are pretty pedestrian. And yet, it's a lot of fun because it keeps everything down to the basics. This isn't meant to be an accurate representation of hockey in terms of specifics. It gets the broad strokes right and makes sure the action is fast-paced and entertaining. Sure, there are fights, icing, shootouts, etc., but it doesn't get into the nitty-gritty. It keeps everything focused on fundamentals and with three different players to choose from, there is a nice bit of strategy involved and has a slight RPG-ish feel. As fun as it is playing against the computer, this game is best experienced when playing with a friend. An underrated gem for the NES.
