A forgotten little gem from the end of the Playstation 1 era is a strange mix of a game that tries to look backwards and forwards in the storyline as Gabe and Lian try to stop the consortium as well as explain how they met and how they first came into contact with the Syphon Filter virus. This strange story structure can leave the gamer more than a little puzzled even though the arcs are generally short and self-contained. A cleaner through-line might have helped, but it holds together. The first half, which deals with the Costa Rica FMV from the original and other elements, is stronger than the second. Missions involving survivalists is nothing more than padding and other missions are a bit abrupt. The gameplay itself hasn't changed much, but the enemies aren't nearly as aggressive as they were in SF2, resulting in the easiest game in the trilogy. It's by no means a classic, but those who enjoyed the first two will get some mileage out of this one.
