This interesting little test that launched with the Game Boy is a pretty weird video game that has little in common with Mario games that came before or since. If you take out Mario and replace him with some other anonymous character, it really doesn't have any detrimental effect. And in fact, it might be better. Fair or not, the Mario name carries a certain expectation and this game doesn't quite live up to the name. Some decent music and some tricky platforming are undone by wonky jump physics and a general slapdash feel. A test run before Yokoi and his team would do much better three years later with Super Mario Land 2.
