A forgotten gem from a system that all but crashed on arrival gets a second chance and demonstrates some real game design chops with a style that is closer to Super Mario Bros. 2 than anything. The ability to play four different characters, each with their own unique skillsets, give this game surprising depth. While it doesn't get utilized as much as you'd think, the game is still rich with secrets and surprises around every corner. Many levels feature callbacks or nods to past Mario games and they make this, on some level, feel like a greatest hits album. Nothing wrong with that and the 3D platforming, while mostly linear, offers plenty of flourishes. A jazzy soundtrack in the background offers the right level of relaxing. An unappreciated gem that should finally be getting its due.

(Note: Played the Switch Version of this game, which has slightly different controls and jump physics than the Wii U version).
