I got icewind Dale on release around 13 or so years ago. Not quite sure win, but it was after Baldur's Gate. Think of Icewind Dale as BG's little cousin that cuts the fat and gets straight to the chase. Its literally Dungeon after Dungeon in this game. Each one gets bigger than the last and they take hours to go through. It can be a slog, and its pace and difficulty drove me away more than once.

But years later I'm much more disciplined. I've set my sights on defeating this gem after its beaten me multiple times. This time I'm playing the Enhanced Edition on Steam. I didnt get it at launch because quite frankly BG:EE was buggy as all get out. I let it stir and grabbed it on the Autumn steam sale.

In this first play I set about creating my party of six. Hours can be spent gruelling over each stat point and choice, compounded by BG2's kit options now being available. I try to keep a steady pace and not lose myself in min/maxing, dual classes, and the like especially since I'm only planning to play the game proper and not its expansion or heart of fury mode. I roll decent but not amazing stats and keep moving quickly, Nevertheless, it still takes about 40 minutes.

The end result, 2 fighters, 1 ranger, a multi-class fighter/cleric, a multi-class thief/mage, and a sorcerer. It's melee heavy with good hp, which I hope will counter the more straightforward overwhelming enemy flanks in ID (compared to BG2 at least).

After party is up, I start the game and try to get everybody with okay starting equipment. A couple of characters dont get armor yet. I'll need money and fast to finish out starter gear on such a tanky group.
