Welcome to the brand new IFR ATC Course, designed to encourage pilots take the next step to expand their flight simulation experience. The focus here is on ATC communication, phraseology and procedures.

Part 3 of our series delves into effective communication procedures while operating under UNICOM and transitioning to ATC coverage.

There's no formal script for UNICOM communications, but it's crucial to transmit intentions clearly and understand others' communications. We'll also review essential procedures like SIDs, STARs, approaches, and missed approaches, along with a thorough revision of the Instrument Landing System (ILS).

Our journey begins from Cork (EICK) with UNICOM coverage and concludes at Shannon (EINN), where TWR and GND services will be online.

Part 1 – Planning our flight:
Using Navigraph and SimBrief, we'll plan our route from Cork to Shannon. Assessing traffic, weather, active runways, and ATC stations, we'll ensure comprehensive preparation with all required charts.

Part 2 – Filing our Flight Plan:
Utilising SimBrief and the TTM Website, we'll complete and file our flight plans.

Part 3 – The Flight:
This section focuses on practical flying, navigation, and effective ATC communication. Starting from Cork, we'll conduct pre-flight inspections, pushback, taxiing, departure procedures, en-route navigation, approach strategies, and conclude with a smooth landing at Shannon.

Throughout the stages of our flight, we'll maintain a clear understanding of the ILS, which provides both lateral and vertical guidance for safe landings in low visibility conditions. The Localizer (LOC) and Glide Slope (GS) work together to guide the aircraft precisely to the runway, enhancing safety during approach and landing. Understanding these components is crucial for pilots to execute precision approaches and landings successfully.
