In Defense of Max Payne 3
119Max Payne 3 is often heralded as the anomaly piece in the Max Payne franchise. To most it strayed too much from the original games, in which the tone and structural integrity of three went miles away from what the original games had offered. With a staunch understanding of Max Payne as a character and building a story upon a base that the original creators had already finished by Max Payne 2’s ending, Rockstar had no outside help to ensure that they fit Max Payne with a new suit, deserving of taking him out of his comfort. Often much of the criticism around Max Payne 3 wasn’t its incredible gameplay or it’s story that strayed tonally away from the original games at a surface level, but instead it was the fact that the game was completely different in style to Remedy’s games. And well that is kind of expected, as Rockstar had taken up the full reins to develop this game, where Remedy had decided they were done with the character and his story and would move on to new projects.
