In the Halls of the Usurper (Pridemoor Keep) - Shovel Knight Remix
When it comes to "Shovel Knight", besides its solid gameplay and great music, one thing I like about it is that as the add-on content was released, it helped to flesh out a lot of characters, with King Knight being a prime example.
In the base game, King Knight's a pretty simple, straightforward character- he wants wealth, he wants to be a king, joins up with the Enchantress for the sake of being part of the winning team, and then proceeds to kick Pridemoor out of his castle and usurp his throne. However, in "King of Cards", you learn that it's not so cut and dry. In that game, you learn that King Knight isn't just some toady that the Enchantress propped up to be a glorified puppet. On the contrary, we see first-hand how King Knight started from humble beginnings as a man with a dream who only had the support of his mother and some mice, but thanks to his strength, cunning, and charisma, he was able to amass quite a following and became a champion of the people who was even able to overpower the Enchantress.
However, because of his greed and disdain for Pridemoor dating his mom (King Knight only turns on his friends and joins the Enchantress when Pridemoor brings up his mom), King Knight pretty much sells his soul to the devil and the rest is history.
This, in turn, changes the context of the fight against King Knight in the base game from this light-hearted bout against some blowhard dandy who supposedly waltzed into a castle and wanted to play king to a tragic fight against a capable combatant who has sacrificed the respect and friendship of everyone he knew, including his mother who had supported him through thick and thin and was the only person he truly cared about, only for those sacrifices to be in vain as we, the player, defeat him and remove him from power.
As such, while "King of Knights" is arguably my least favorite "Shovel Knight" game, I find the plot to be pretty solid and like how it made King Knight such a comedic delight- a good contrast to the more somber atmosphere of "Specter of Torment". Heck, it even made the theme for his level, Pridemoor Keep, more memorable to me.
