I went behind the scenes of Dear Edward so you didn’t have to! I found out that the role of Dee Dee was specifically written with Connie Britton in mind and Taylor Schilling was an incredible co-star and friend to her Colin O’Brien. Colin was working through some really tough emotions with this being his first leading role and all – on top of the fact that he recently lost his grandfather to Covid. He confided in Taylor and the two of them created a beautiful friendship as she helped him work through everything with playful banter and breathing exercises. The writer and creator of the series, Jason Katims, was so moved by the work everyone was doing on set that he was constantly finding himself crying in the editing room – much to his own embarrassment. Something else that was pretty spectacular – and a little intense – about the show was the grief group. The director of the episode, Allison Liddi-Brown, set the scene for all of the actors to really treat it like one. Everyone used their own grief and experiences in the scene and worked through real-life issues! It was truly a therapeutic moment on set. There are also quite a few narrative differences from the book to the show which is due to how character driven the writing is – which also opens it up to more seasons in the future. What do you think? Are you excited to see how Dear Edward plays out? Let us know in the comments!
