Well, they make money with new hardware - as well as software
If your phone gets an update and suddenly doesn't work as well as it used to work, and you see a shiny new better thing to get… will you get it?
iOS is forced obsolescence, as versions up to iOS 7 did not necessarily degrade perf in older/existing iOS devices like it does now
They clean up bits of it, but the software still struggles to keep up with the hardware (didn't always used to be that way)
They push the upgrade cycle not just with new hardware features, but with insanely crippling software experiences - they go hand-in-hand
Incremental improvements don't move the ball forward in the marketplace without a software kick - so, I do believe new iOS experiences are designed to "force" an upgrade
They know it's less painful for you to spend more money with them than it is to go with another ecosystem, and this is a competitive advantage
I think software updates are largely beneficial, but Apple's strategy is poor
There's a reason this only happens with iPhones - iOS, Apple. I don't think it's a cultural "I feel it's slower since there's a new one."
This ecosystem is now driven by hardware, and that would explain why Apple's software has become increasingly sloppy.
If improving the performance of free software doesn't drive any more sales, then why spend resources on it?
