My co-worker ordered the parts to do an IPS screen mod on his GBC and his GBA from China a few months ago. Well they finally arrived but he decided he didn't want to do them (I'm pretty sure he's capable just doesn't have the space or tools maybe?) so I said I'd do them. He gave me an EZ-Flash IV GBA micro-SD flashcart for payment so we'll check that out next.

The GBC was fairly easy. No soldering required at all. There is a fair bit to cut out of the shell to fit the larger screen including cutting the top of the D-pad. There's a cool capacitive sensor (metal plate) that goes under the IR port that allows you to adjust the brightness of the screen by tapping the IR port. This metal plate blocks the IR sensor so you will loose IR capability. I suppose it's optional but it's damn cool and I'm not sure how many people still use IR communication but if you do just keep that in mind. This was my first time doing a GBC and it went smoothly.

The GBA was also fairly easy. This is now the 3rd one I've done but the 2nd one I've done successfully as I did screw up the first one. This was a little different as the shell was not only pre-cut for the larger IPS screen but also had built in spacers to hold it. This is different from the pre-cut shells I've used before but was very high quality. Actually the quality of this shell was as good as the "prestige" ones from HHL. I did put the 3M double sided foam in the front of the shell but I didn't pull the peel off the screen side. So it's in there as a buffer but the screen can be easily taken out if need be. Without the added depth of a 3D printed alignment bracket sticking out behind the screen this buffer space is going to help keep the screen in place without being permanent!

Anyway, I gotta say the GBC looks outstanding. The color pops and the contrast is so good with black levels that hide in the darkness of the bezel. Looks seamless, bright and oh so colorful!
