So, another Force Unleashed video! We couldn’t help but notice that between Games with Gold, Xbox One backwards compatibility and Humble Bundle and Steam sales, there may be a lot of new players suddenly picking up The Force Unleashed. Maybe you’ve had previous interest in Star Wars: The Force Unleashed, maybe not. If you’re looking at picking this game up, let’s cover some of the simplest points, without bogging you down with nerddom. I’ll keep this quick so we can all use this as a total beginners guide to Star Wars The Force Unleashed.
Going by the comments on our previous Force Unleashed videos, the first game is arguably the best Star Wars action game for a decade. More of you seem to enjoy the story of the first Force Unleashed game, but there is a big shout that the combat and graphics step it up in the second. One thing’s for sure - you're going to get a much longer gaming experience with the Games with Gold Force Unleashed 1, although it is hardly a grind anyway. The game is running all kinds of mad technology under the hood, which is what makes it so much fun. Lightsaber combos, force powers, exploring loads of wacky planets and some pretty decent boss fights. Even if you don't like Star Wars, smashing sh*t up with superpowers is never boring.
You don’t need to know anything about Star Wars to give The Force Unleashed a go. If you've seen the original film Trilogy then this adds a backstory to the origins of the Rebel Alliance. But all you need to know is given to you in the game. Star Wars can be daunting to some or off putting to others, but this is just a hack and slash game first and foremost. It’s aimed at everyone, not just fanboys.
The Force Unleashed was never strictly considered canon, and Disney call all this stuff 'Legends' now, so the story has zero relation to any films or TV you’ve seen recently. Think of it like a “Marvel What If” episode, and just enjoy it for what it is.
One fun fact is The Force Unleashed was originally part of a planned trilogy of games. There’s too much detail to go into here but if you’re interested, linked below and at the end are links to more videos, all about the cancelled third game and the Force Unleashed Trilogy as a whole.
The main conclusion at the time of writing is that right now, the game is free on Games with Gold. The game is has cropped up in Humble Bundles and sales, so even if you miss this, there’s always an opportunity to pick it up for a song. The first Force Unleashed is also backwards compatible with your Xbox One and as far as franchise tie ins go, it's up there. It does its own thing and doesn’t follow a movie script, which makes it worth a play in my book. The campaign isn't too long, it's got a pretty wicked story and there's plenty to do. We haven’t had a Star Wars games like this for a while, and we might not get any more for a long time.
Snap it up with Games with Gold and enjoy smashing stormtroopers about with the Force.
