As an Italian myself I can’t help but wonder: is Mario really Italian? To answer such a difficult question we need to dissect it in three minor questions, the answers of which will make up this video:
• Who is Mario?
• Was Mario purposely created to be Italian?
• Are there any proofs that Mario is Italian in the lore?

I want to point out that the last lore question has a fundamental importance to find out if Mario is actually Italian, so stick with me because the answers to that question are quite crazy!

Alright, so, who is Mario?
Since Mario never talks in full sentences he is not a defined character with his own goals and motivations, so everything we know about him is what we can see: Mario is a guy with a moustache and a hat dressed as a plumber, he is an astonishing acrobat, an all-sports athlete, he speaks only in english but with an Italian accent, he’s got one very Italian animation in Super Mario Odyssey, he’s always full of energy and almost always cheerful and happy like he’s had too much sugar!

Before being named Mario, the happy plumber was simply referred to as Jumpman. The name Mario was given to him by Nintendo of America after their Italian-American Executive Mario Segale, who was a little similar to the character and also had a mustache. Mario’s voice actor Charles Martinet always gave Mario an Italian accent based on how Mario had been handled not only in the games but in other media. When Nintendo created Super Mario Bros they also wanted to include a player two, who ended up being Mario’s brother, and was given the name of Luigi, which solidified Mario’s Italianness by also having his brother have an Italian name, and later on, also Luigi showed an Italian accent when speaking english.

So, what we now know is that Mario was not supposed to be Italian from the get go, but it’s a trait of his that came along naturally thanks to many people.

In 2014’s Yoshi’s New Island’s ending we can see that a stork delivers Baby Mario and Baby Luigi at their home to their true parents at what seems to be some kind of “mushroom house”, or in Italian it’s called a “casa fungo” or “casa a forma di fungo”. Convinced that I was about to waste my time, I decided to google those houses, and to my surprise, I found out that there is a fricking mushroom town in Bardineto Italy! Which means Mario's house exists in Italy! On contrary to how it looks like, there are people inhabiting those houses, so please don’t go there as a tourist. To add on top of this, there are some pictures of Mario’s childhood from the Family Album “The Early Years” in which we can partially see Mario’s mother and father. What’s interesting about this is that his father is depicted having a quite stereotypical Italian behavior. I even found a video in which there is a collection of Mario and Luigi Italian gibberish, what they are talking is not quite Italian but I think it must be one of the many Italian dialects, since I was able to hear Mario say “prosciutto” which means “ham”, and Luigi saying “mi sono rotto i maroni” which is a foul way of saying that “he’s fed up”.

As we said at the start of the video, the last question has a fundamental importance to answer if Mario is really Italian, let’s now scan all the evidence gathered in the video to confirm our clear hypothesis.

• Mario talk with an Italian accent
• Mario has a stereotypical Italian animation
• Mario is an Italian name
• Mario’s brother Luigi has an Italian name
• Luigi talks with an Italian accent
• Mario and Luigi’s childhood house exists in Italy
• Mario’s father has a stereotypical Italian behavior
• Mario and Luigi can be heard speaking some Italian dialect

Yes! The answer is yes! And there are 8 reasons for it, Mario is 100% Italian! Oh, and also Luigi of course! So, you are welcome Princess Peach, and you’re welcome too Daisy!
