John Wick Chronicles - VR Gameplay HTC Vive
It's a wave shooter. It's a AAA, pretty cool move licensed wave shooter. But it's still a "wave" shooter.
You get 3 missions and a training area to shoot it out with enemies that show up. There really isn't any wave counter. Enemies just spawn as soon as you down the last guy. The "wave" is obfuscated from the player but it's still there.
That being said. It was kinda fun. It does have a level of polish that would set it apart from others. However, if you're utterly sick of wave shooters, this one isn't going to do it for you unless you really like John Wick.
Now that the obligatory wave shooter bashing is out of the way... I did enjoy myself with John Wick. That may be the VR withdraws speaking. I'm willing to admit that. I did have fun though. It may not be $20 worth of fun but it is a nice addition to the John Wick universe if you're a fan.
Definitely a pick up if it ends up on sale. Potentially worth it if you're not fed up with the wave shooter or just really like John Wick.
Graphically it looked good. Not stellar. It looks worse in the video due to the left eye only view and my attempt to zoom in and minimize the black bars. Charon (the concierge at the Continental who I couldn't remember his name) looked much better in game than he does in the thumbnail. It wasn't the best ever, but it's on the high end.
The audio was pretty well done as well. The only complaint was Charon talks too much. I enjoyed the voice acting and the background music did a good job at setting the stage for action. There wasn't really anything super memorable though. No real wow moments though.
The big issues I had with the game were the trailer advertisement in the middle of the game. It wasn't as bad as I expected it to be but it still felt dirty. I dropped $20 on this game and you're going to forcefeed me movie trailers? No thank you. If it had been more than the 6 seconds of trailer before the "interruption" the game would have immediately received a down vote. There are better ways to sneak a trailer into the game.
No locomotion. I want to walk around. The game doesn't let you. It's actually an issue in the second level where you have to place the cover pieces. All of the cover positions are outside of my chaperone bounds so i have to play that level essentially unprotected.
It's a pretty solid thumbs sideways. Some people are going to enjoy it, some people will outright hate it. It's all essentially going to come down to your opinion on wave shooters. I'll give it a thumbs up as it's not 'bad' per se and like I started off with, I did have fun. This is just another reason why Steam needs a neutral option for reviewers.
