Jurassic Park: Trespasser - Software HRTF/binaural positional 3D audio (in 1998!) - No OpenAL Soft!
Headphones are recommended for the best listening experience! This is a short demonstration of Trespasser's own HRTF implementation, with no hardware acceleration required. Hear how the gunshot sound travels around your head as I move the hand outside the edges of the screen and fire repeatedly! Pay attention to how the machine gun and dinosaur noises behave when appearing from behind versus the front of the camera perspective!
I also tested this on an Pentium Pro computer with a Sound Blaster AWE32 to verify this. This is how the game sounds in its natural state!
This footage and audio was captured from the following computer:
- Dell Dimension XPS R400 case and motherboard
- Intel 440BX chipset
- Intel Pentium II 400Mhz processor
- Matrox Millennium II AGP (8MB) video card
- Creative Labs 3D Blaster Voodoo 2 (CT6670) (12MB) 3D accelerator card
- Creative Labs Sound Blaster Live! (CT4620) sound card
- Turtle Beach Montego (Aureal Vortex) (A3D) sound card
- 192MBs of PC100 SDR SDRAM
- Windows 98 (FE) operating system
Captured with an Epiphan DVI2USB 3.0. Enjoy the per-pixel bump mapping!
Creative Environmental Audio Extensions (EAX 1.0) are also enabled. The 3dfx Voodoo2 (with the Glide API) is used for the hardware accelerated rendering mode.
The game version is the original retail boxed CD-ROM release without any patches installed (version 1.00). The SB Live drivers are the original “Liveware 1.0” VXD drivers straight from the August 1998 driver CD-ROM bundled with the Live/Live Value. No third-party software wrapper or HRTF emulation was used on the computer. This is all native SB Live functionality!
