It was Juventus' fourth UEFA final in a row and they were looking for revenge after losing to Borussia Dortmund in the 1997 final, after triumphing in the 1996 UEFA Champions League final over Ajax. But their opponents were Real Madrid, a Real Madrid who hadn't been in the Champions League final since 1981 but a Real Madrid that needed to win to keep their Champions League status for the 1998-99 season.
