Hepburn died aged 96 after a career spanning six decades. She won four Academy Awards for Best Actress making her the person with the most Oscars for acting.

A forceful character from a wealthy, politically active family (her mother had been a campaigner for women’s rights) she exuded confidence from the moment she arrived in Hollywood in the early 1930s, something that set her apart from many young starlets. After an initially successful run of films she ran into some trouble at the box office and behind the scenes with directors and studio executives. At the same time influential cinema owners labeled her as “box office” poison and had she been a different person her career might have ended there.

In response to the criticism he moved from dramatic roles portraying strong willed women and entered the world of comedy. Her initial forays met with limited financial success but were critically acclaimed…this is likely due to audiences not yet associating her with funnier films…

She did a stint at the theater in a successful stage run of “Philadelphia Story" and her boyfriend at the time, the eccentric millionaire Howard Hughes , advised her to purchase the film rights (and possibly funded this).

Before filming began, Hepburn shrewdly noted, "I don't want to make a grand entrance in this picture. Moviegoers ... think I'm too la-di-da or something. A lot of people want to see me fall flat on my face." Thus the film began with Cary Grant knocking the actress flat on her backside. Hepburn’s character was crafted to have audiences "laugh at her enough that they would ultimately sympathize with her", which Hepburn felt was crucial in "recreating" her public image. The Philadelphia Story was one of the biggest hits of 1940, breaking records at Radio City Music Hall.

The review in Time declared, "Come on back, Katie, all is forgiven."
