2The Kerbal Space Program Asteroid Recovery Mission is finally released!
In this video, I go after my first asteroid. I spent about and hour and one half designing and testing the rocket before starting this video (or even picking an asteroid to target). I initially was going to go for a 'C' class asteroid, but then I found this 'A' class asteroid that would have an intercept with Minums and decided to go for it. As a result, my ship is a bit overbuilt, but that will just give us a lot of safety in the amount of fuel we can use.
I'm not sure why, but getting a maneuver to intercept the asteroid's path was very difficult (took me about 30 minutes of playing with the maneuvers). I initially wasn't getting ascending or descending nodes to appear, so getting the orbits aligned was difficult. Even with the orbits mostly aligned, it was showing the closest approach marker when my ship would be at periapsis, instead of near apoapsis, when I would be clearly closer to the asteroid.
After a while though, I plotted and intercept course, and came about 10 km from the asteroid and started to match velocity. We were then able to approach the asteroid and hook our claw into it, while still approaching Minmus' sphere of influence.
Should we attempt to put the asteroid into orbit around Minmus, or should we attempt to bring it back to Kerbin and maybe land it near Kerbal Space Center using a bunch of parachutes?
