This video has a close look at designing an Interplanetary SSTO (Single Stage to Orbit) craft with the ability to rescue two other Kerbals. This design is the product of a lot of trial and error before finally getting it right. The video shows all the lessons learned in the final design.

As a bit of background, the purpose of the ship was to take to Eve to rescue Jeb and Bob but what I didn't realise until I ran a test mission is that Eve doesn't have an oxygen atmosphere so I'd only be able to send it to that planet if I used mods to convert the Kethane atmosphere to Oxygen in the intakes. So please ignore all my comments about a 'rescue mission'. It aint happening yet.
