Kid Icarus, one of Nintendo's lesser-known franchises, born from the creative minds behind the Metroid series like a little brother.

It started with a game on the NES that used Metroid 1's engine, and then a Game Boy sequel that used Metroid II's engine.

From there, it languished for years... until 2008, when Masahiro Sakurai included the series wholesale as a playable franchise in Super Smash Bros. Brawl.

But from there, Sakurai would later lead the development of a brand new game for the then-fledgling Nintendo 3DS, taking place (literally) 25 after the NES entry. If Kirby and Smash are Sakurai's children, then at this point, Kid Icarus would be his stepchild.

I had go through some hoops just to make this playthrough possible. I was determined for years to make it my very first 3DS playthrough on the channel, and eventually, even despite further technical difficulties, I'm FINALLY making this happen!

And right on the game's 13th Anniversary!
----------

Pit, the series protagonist, as well as his goddess Palutena, retain their huge redesigns from Brawl, and with this new game came a slew of other old and brand new characters to fill out their universe.

Medusa, Queen of the Underworld, was somehow revived. Under Palutena's guidance, the young, flightless angel warrior named Pit stood in Palutena's frontlines as the one hope of defeating Medusa and her Underworld Army once more.
----------

Before I actually get this going, the game has a fun How-to-Play video where Palutena teaches you, or literally Pit himself, how to play this game:

1. THREE BASIC CONTROLS - 2:36

This was a very ambitious game to make on such a small system. It was designed with three different controls in mind.

Moving with the Circle Pad.
Shooting with the L Button.
Aiming with the Touch Screen.

These can be changed around.

This is great game, but its controls tended to be its biggest criticism. You have to make it work for YOU.
----

2. FLOW OF BATTLE - 3:11

Typically, a stage or Chapter will start off with Pit using Palutena's Power of Flight to engage in Air Battles. He will eventually have to land to switch to Land Battles. From there, he must seek out and defeat a boss.
----

3. AIR BATTLES - 4:35

The reason these Air Battles can only last 5 minutes is because afterwards of flying, the Power of Flight will burn Pit's wings up.

The poor boy still can't fly on his own.
----

4. LAND BATTLES - 5:17

More player and camera controls with Land Battles. Particularly Dashing like in Super Smash Bros. (or Super Bash Sisters).

Except this time, if Pit dashes for too long, he'll get tired and will need to stop to catch his breath.
----

5. RANGED AND MELEE ATTACKS - 6:22

Almost all of Pit's attacks can be performed with one button.

Hold L for Continuous Fire.
Press L when the reticle charges up for a Charged Shot.

You can also dash into either of these shots, and even these are changed depending on if you dash shoot forwards, backwards, or sideways.

Lastly, if you're right up to enemies, you will go for a Melee Combo, instead. You can also do Melee Dash Attacks up close.
----

6. DODGING - 7:43

In Land Battles you Dash right as an attack is about to hit, Pit will swiftly Dodge the move instead. However, doing this too much at a time will also drain his stamina and slow down further dodges.

He can also Dodge in Air Battles after he takes on a gliding stance. In this case, you have to slingshot your movement of him to Dodge. The gliding stance also lets Pit maneuvers through the air in general more smoothly.
----

7. POWERS - 8:56

Pit can unleash different Powers bestowed upon him by Palutena. You'll first have to equip these in blocks or Power Pieces, and that's assuming you can make the ones you want fit on a grid. You can also let Palutena set it up for you.
----

8 . INTENSITY - 9:57

Hearts can be dumped into the Fiend's Cauldron to make your run of a given Chapter more difficult (or more easy after going low enough). If you can manage this, though, you can get more and better rewards, such as more Hearts and better weapons.

If you die, your Intensity will drop.
----

9. WEAPONS - 11:38

There are nine types of weapons: Blade, Staff, Claws, Bow, Palm, Club, Cannon, Orbitars, and Arm.

These 9 types have all sorts of different forms, each with their own stats and strengths. This even includes two of the exact same weapon.

These can be rewarded, bought with Hearts, or even fused together to make stronger weapons.
----

10. CONTROL STYLES - 12:58

Once again, there are different ways to control the game. You can change what you use to move Pit and move the camera.
----

11. LIGHT VS. DARK - 13:46

This game's online multiplayer mode. Teams of three have to defeat each other with their collected weapons. This is tied to a team gauge.

When a team is defeated, an angel such as Pit will appear. Defeat him to finally win the match.

Now to play this game for real!
