A playthrough of Taito's role-playing game for the Nintendo Game Boy, Knight Quest.

Knight's Quest is a game that got very little press when it came out, and its release came and went unnoticed by pretty much everyone. It was the product of Lenar, the people that brought us Deadly Towers and Gunman's Proof, but unlike those games (action games with RPG elements), Knight's Quest is a fairly traditional, turn-based JRPG.

You play as Will, a kid who wants to prove himself to become a knight, hence the title. It's very simple, like early Game Boy RPGs that weren't Final Fantasy games: you accept a quest, go fight monsters to level yourself up, wander off to some far reach of the map, kill a big monster, and repeat the cycle a few times.

The battle system does show a neat spark of creativity, though. When you attack, you are given the choice between four different strikes, and if you select the one that your enemy is weak to, you'll inflict a ton of damage. That's about as complex as combat gets, but it does make things a bit more engaging than mindlessly spamming the A button on "Fight."

The thing that I found the most appealing about Knight's Quest was its graphics. There is some nifty pixel art going on in the cutscenes and battles, and when fighting, Will is quite a bit more animated than I'm used to seeing in 8-bit JRPGs. The music and the sound effects don't match the quality of the graphics, though. They're not bad, but they quickly become repetitive and grating if you leave the volume up.

Overall, Knight Quest is a perfectly servicable handheld RPG that doesn't outstay its welcome, but if your looking for something with depth or complexity, you'd probably be better off looking elsewhere. (Like Final Fantasy Legend. *wink*)
