A playthrough of Nintendo's 1986 platformer for the Nintendo Famicom Disk System, Super Mario Bros. 2 (スーパーマリオブラザーズ2).

This is the original version of "The Lost Levels" that was included as part of Super Mario All-Stars.

Oh boy. If you like your gaming sessions to hurt, this game ought to be near the top of your list. It's the first direct sequel to Super Mario Bros., it shares many common elements with a couple spin-offs (Vs. SMB and All- Night Nippon SMB), and it is the game famous for being passed over for release by Nintendo of America after Howard Phillips decided it was an overly-difficult rehash of the first game that wouldn't serve the brand well.

It is a bit of a rehash, and it is entirely too difficult, but it's a seriously satisfying game to fully clear. It plays a lot like SMB, but the physics have been tweaked a bit to allow for a higher bounce off of enemies, which is a skill that really has to be mastered to get through the game.

The game features thirteen worlds as opposed the first's eight, and you now get to play as Luigi! Luigi can jump much higher and farther than Mario, but he lacks Mario's ability to stop on a near dime. He's pretty much a necessity in the secret levels, but his banana peel feet really take some adjusting to.

I enjoyed the game in spite of how infuriating some of the traps can be, though as far as I'm concerned, stage 8-2 can rot in hell for that windy springboard jump. This Mario 2 is pretty much the ultimate challenge for any fan of the classic series so long as you can deal with the lack of polish (gotta loved being nailed by Bowser's fire blasts that you can't see when he's throwing hammers because of the system's sprite limit!) and the bugs (like being awkwardly teleported through the side of a pipe or staircase when the wind is blowing).

To access most of the secret content, levels A-1 through D-4, you have to beat the game eight times. Thankfully, this doesn't have to be done all at once, as the game saves progress to the floppy disk. Notice the stars on the title screen's logo graphic from the second loop on? They show how many times the game has been successfully completed. You can play with either character, and warp zones don't disqualify a run of a game from the loop count. (All of this is the same as how you'd access All Night Nippon Super Mario Bros.' equivalent content.)

Here's the breakdown of the video:

Playthrough #1 is played with Mario, stages 1-1 through 8-4, no warps.

47:18 World 9 followed by a special Game Over message

52:29, 2nd loop with Luigi begins.
Warps zones are used in playthroughs 2 through 8.
Stage order: 1-1, 1-2, 4-1 through 4-4, 5-1, 5-2, 8-1 through 8-4.

1:07:24 3rd loop
1:22:30 4th loop
1:37:41 5th loop
1:52:07 6th loop
2:07:21 7th loop
2:21:49 8th loop

2:36:48 9th loop played, showing secret worlds A-1 through D-4.

Wow. That's a lot of Mario.
