Knights of Xentar (PC) Playthrough - NintendoComplete
A playthrough of Megatech's 1995 console-style role playing game for Dos PCs, Knights of Xentar.
This recording is of the CD-ROM talkie release.
Knights of Xentar is a PC port/upgrade of the 1991 Japanese PC88 (and later, x68000 and PC Engine CD) RPG Dragon Knight III, and is the only entry in the series to ever be released in English. Please be warned that it is an eroge title, so there's a fair amount of graphic, albeit animated, content. I am playing the US-18 version (patched from the initial 13+ release) that can be fairly explicit in a few places. This version was rated 18 in the UK as well, but only 16 in Germany.
Funnily enough, I've never cared for the nudity in this title. That was never the draw for me. My parents actually bought it for me when it was first released (I was 13) because I was SOOO excited that a console-style JRPG was getting an English PC release. The genre was virtually non-existent in England and America on the PC in 1995. It wasn't anywhere near on the same level of Final Fantasy or Dragon Quest, but it was fun, easy, and had a pretty slick presentation. I always enjoyed it, and I used the mouse pad that it came with it for years until it finally got so ratty that I had to throw it away :)
The game is pretty typical RPG fare outside of the nudie scenes. It's quite similar to Final Fantasy with its overworld/town/dungeon/repeat structure and heavy reliance on random encounters. The battles are largely automated, with the player only having to take control to use items, spells, or to adjust the AI behavior. It also relies fairly heavily on grinding, but the experience and gold come at a pretty brisk pace. The graphics are pretty good, using the classic Japanese PC screen format of 16-color 640x400, which looks fantastic. Rarely, if ever, do you ever really notice it is running at such a low color depth. The amount of detail obscures that fact quite nicely. The soundtrack is generally catchy, using the OPL2 for stereo FM music to pretty good effect.
I also really enjoyed the personality of the translation, which is fairly similar in tone to Working Designs' work if the time. The voice acting is considerably worse than most notorious examples (including Resident Evil!), but the campiness keeps it pretty amusing.
I don't believe I missed anything major in the playthrough. I did cut the grinding out at a few points, but besides that I've left everything as it originally was. I show the gallery of girly cinematics at the end of the video, right after the ending credits (skip to 9:11:50).
I had a lot of fun revisiting this game, and hope you enjoy the video just as much!
